People with the Narcolepsy sleeping disorder feel very sleepy and tired during the day, even after having a full night’s sleep. Feeling tired is a normal thing; however, it is not normal for sleepiness to interfere in the daily life. It is necessary to watch out for signs such as:

  • Heavy lids
  • Slow thinking
  • Lack of staying focused or paying attention
  • Feeling grouchy

Falling asleep between 10 to 20 minutes of lying down is normal. However, falling asleep in less than five minutes confirms that there is a serious sleep disorder that needs to be handled.


Noisy breathing caused by vibrations in the throat while sleeping is known as snoring. Some changes can help stop snoring, such as:

  • Sleeping on the side instead of the back
  • Weight loss
  • Cutting down on alcohol and smoking

Treatment: the use of nasal strips helps in preventing snoring. Placing one rip over the nose before going to bed does the magic.

Sleep Apnea

  • Using the CPAP device (pushes air through the airway)

  • Stopping alcohol, nicotine and caffeine intakes
  • Surgery, to enlarge the airway

Prescription sleeping pills may be an option if all attempts to avoid sleeping disorders fail. It is very important to use sleeping very carefully. It is helpful to remember the following:

  • People should never take a sleeping pill until they are going to bed.
  • Getting medical evaluations before starting the use of sleeping pills.
  • Never to mix alcohol with sleeping pills, because it increases sedative effects of pills.
  • Quitting the medication gradually on the doctor’s directions. Stopping the use of the pills abruptly may be very dangerous.
  • Watching out for any side effects or reactions to the sleeping pills.
